Therapy for Men in Culver City, CA
You’re tired of reacting in ways you regret with the people closest to you.
Those reactions have a logic underneath them, and understanding where the logic came from gives you more room to handle the next conversation differently.
You’re tired of reacting in ways you regret, and you still don’t know why you keep doing it.
Most men who come to see me have been managing this for a long time before they say anything about it. Life looks fine from the outside, work gets done, everyone still counts on them, and no one has any idea what an ordinary week actually costs. Then something small happens at home, and it comes out with more frustration than expected.
The promise to handle it better next time gets made honestly, right before next time goes the same way it always does.
For a lot of men the harder part sits outside of work. Dating has gone the same way enough times that starting over feels more draining than hopeful. Others are in a relationship where nothing is technically wrong and a satisfying connection still feels out of reach. Understanding where these patterns started and what’s been keeping them running, leads to better ways of handling conflict, pressure, and closeness start to become apparent.
Individual Therapy for Men
You keep telling yourself it isn’t bad enough for therapy while the same fight costs you another month. We look at where your reactions come from and what’s been keeping them going, so you have more of a say in how you handle them.
You can come in on your own or bring your partner into the work.
Couples Therapy
By the time most couples call me, the same fight has happened more times than either of you can count. We figure out what’s driving the pattern you two keep repeating, so you can both understand it and start to respond differently.
Therapy for Creatives and Intellectuals
You’ve read the books and can analyze yourself in detail, and nothing you make feels good enough. We look at where that standard came from and what it’s been costing you, so the expectations you hold yourself to are ones you chose.
I also see adults of all ages for anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions.
I’m Dr. Colin Mattingly, a licensed clinical psychologist in Culver City, and I’ve been seeing patients since 2017.
I earned my PsyD in clinical psychology, wrote my dissertation on ADHD, and completed a predoctoral internship and a postdoctoral fellowship before getting licensed. My background is in psychodynamic and existential therapy, and I draw on other approaches when they’re a better fit for the person I’m working with.
In therapy with me, we work on understanding what’s been driving the problem and what’s been keeping it going, so that better ways of handling it can become apparent. I’ll listen without interrupting, and I’ll also ask questions and tell you what I’m noticing. Between sessions, I’m happy to take phone calls and answer emails.

Anger and relationship patterns
Snapping over small things, shutting down in the middle of an argument, or seeing the same fight show up in more than one relationship.
Specialties
Men often come in with more than one of these going on at the same time.
Dating and relationships
Dating that keeps going the same way, or a relationship that should feel better than it does.
Career pressure and meaning
Doing well at a job you worked hard for and wondering whether this is the life you wanted or the one you got used to.
Adult ADHD
A recent diagnosis that explains a lot about your past while work, your partner, and your family still feel harder than they should. My doctoral dissertation focused on ADHD.
Perfectionism and self-esteem
Holding yourself to a standard no amount of evidence seems to satisfy.
Starting therapy again
If therapy didn’t help the first time, the first few sessions with me are evaluative for both of us, so you get a real sense of fit early.
How it Works
Getting started with me begins with a free 15 minute call.
Step 1: Free 15 Min Call
Tell me a little about what’s been going on, and ask me anything you’d like to know about how I work.
Step 2: The first few sessions
These are evaluative for both of us, so as I get to know you, you’re deciding whether I’m a good fit.
Step 3: Ongoing sessions
We meet once or twice a week in person or by video, and I’m glad to take calls and emails in between.
Sessions are 50 minutes and $250. I’m out of network and can provide a monthly superbill for possible partial reimbursement, depending on your plan.
11600 Washington Place, Suite 202E, Culver City, and online anywhere in California
The first call is where I hear what’s been going on, and you get to ask me anything.
I’ll ask what brought you to reach out and whether you’ve been in therapy before, including what worked and what didn’t. You can ask me how I work, what sessions look like, or anything else you’d want to know before deciding. If I don’t think I’m the right person to help, I’m happy to point you toward someone who might be.
Take your time to think things through. There’s no rush, and if any questions come up later on, don’t hesitate to reach out.
